Labor Day Kimbockleophonics Spectacular!

Well, it's not really a spectacular, but I am sure it will be a bit of all right when Shrimpanzee hits the stage at this year's Arts, Beats & Eats festival in downtown Pontiac.

They are scheduled to play from 6-7 pm on Labor Day (Monday, September 7th) in the parking lot of the Mill Street Grille. Here is a MAP. See you there!

Captain Dave & The Psychedelic Lounge Cats

Captain Dave & The Psychedelic Lounge Cats are definitely a staff favorite here at Nomeus Is Immune. All I can say is that it's a shame that they're not around these days. They were terrific!

I only got to see them once (at MSU, back in 1991 or so..), but I was completely drawn in. I bought a 3 song cassette at the show and played the crap out of it until I loaned it to someone a few years later and I never saw (or heard) it again. I'm not exactly sure what the title of the tape was, but it had a bizarre illustration of some kind of mutant baby and all it said on the cover was "Infant Lambert". It contained the songs "Cuando", "Morey's Head", and "Barbara Streisand You're The Vodka Of My Modern Day Restaurant". These 3 songs completely blew me away.

A few months later, my friend Kim saw them again at MSU and picked up another tape of theirs called either "A Deck Of Winklers" or just "Deck Of Winklers". This one had 12 or 13 tracks on it and it was amazing! Kim loaned me that cassette and one day it mysteriously disappeared from our house in Lansing. Hmmm...

Then there is the "Free James Brown" 45 with the B-Side "Tropical Turismo" (I think that's what it is called.. I do know that it features Milford's own Joel Westerdale on drums..) that Jeffrey Dajos found in a used record shop in East Lansing.. and he still has it!!!

Anyway, every one of these recordings is amazing, but all I have these days is a cd containing a salvaged version of "Deck Of Winklers" with 2 or 3 songs missing (as it was converted into mp3 from a rapidly deteriorating cassette copy) and mp3's of the "Free James Brown" 45.

I wish this stuff was available!!!

So that brings us to this little video I found the other day. It's from The Flint Underground Music Archive (check it out!) and it is of a Psychedelic Lounge Cats performance at the Arctic Lounge inside the Capitol Theatre in Flint, Michigan, December 1991!!!

Unfortunately Captain Dave was not featured on this night. I'm not sure why, but the vocals were covered by one of the percussionists and one of the guitar players (see? I don't even know their names!!). It doesn't really matter though as the band's performance is tight and the multi-angle camera work is very nicely done. There is also some chaotic interview bits (that do feature Captain Dave), and it's almost an hour of LIVE Psychedelic Lounge Cats music! It's pretty awesome.

Daniel Cowlin is a musician from the Metro Detroit area. He has played in several musical groups including (but not limited to) Shrimpanzee, Trick Of Shadow, Ugly Radio Rebellion (southern chapter), Frankenhead, and Blake Chen and the Haunted Hearts.

Whether he's laying down the low-end, playing a searing lead, or just talking, his sound is unmistakable.

Nomeus Is Immune interviewed him via e-mail. Here is what transpired:

NII: Greetings Daniel Cowlin! Thanks for doing this interview for nomeus is immune. Can I call you Dan?

DAN: Whatever you're most comfortable with: Dan, Daniel, Dan O' Mite, number W....

NII: What have you been up to? Any current musical endeavors you want to tell our readers about?

DAN: Well since my wife and I moved to beautiful Asheville, NC I have been pretty active musically. In addition to the ebbs and flows of my own material I have been playing bass/backing vocals with Jimmy Wallace locally. He is a soft spoken artist with a lot of talent for writing influential, interesting musical situations of many flavors.We have worked with a couple of drummers, keyboardists, guitarist and possibly pedal steel soon.We have a good amount of material. I played a few shows in Atlanta with mad axeman Scott Schroen's Ugly Radio Rebellion (Frank Zappa tribute band) late last year. The highlight was being given the opportunity to once again share the stage with frontman/writer/artist/pantomime dream Andy Turpen (If you don't know of him, you need some schooling! check this - JM).

NII: What kind of equipment are you using these days?

DAN: Most of my equipment is "pawn shop special" finds such as my Schecter P-38, Hartke 4x10 with 2500 Transporter and my Ibanez Digidelay, Boss, DS-1, Super Chorus, Flanger, Phase Shifter, Noise Gate and Tuner pedals.Other non-pawn related items I use are my Musicman Sterling 4 Fretless and Hamer Velocity 2 basses, my Fender Custom (82-3?)Strat, vintage 68' Jaguar copy modified by Jeffrey Dajos called my "Jeffuar" and a Roland 20watt guitar amp. Throw in a Cry Baby Wah and occasionaly DoD envelope tin foil balls and you have my tool box in a crumb cake.

NII: Do you miss the Metro Detroit music community?

DAN: Absolutely! Detroit is among the most eclectic of music cities in the world. Every genre is represented from Downtown to the surrounding college towns. Even when the economy is in the dumps the venues burst at the seems.

NII: Who are your favorite artists in the Metro Detroit area?

DAN: Detroit has been overlooked by the mainstream since the riots in the 60's. I spaz out to Calling Marvin, The Bugs Beddow Band, Tesco Vee and the Meatmen, T.H.E. Modfather and his Groove Coalition, Captain Dave and the Psychedelic Lounge Cats, Iggy, MC 5, John Sinclair and his Blues Scholars, Hinge, Morsel to name a few local favs of past and present.

NII: Favorite artists in general?

DAN: Nature.. nature is underated in my opinion. NII: How did you get involved with Shrimpanzee and the whole OJABOM Media family?

DAN: Long story going back to when I was cheek-high to a zit cream commercial. Seriously, John Moore and I have been making noises together since the days of pubescent emissions and school yard oppression.

NII: What is your most treasured memory of working with the Shrimpanzee/OJABOM family?

DAN: Probably the time spent with Andy Turpen as "stunt front"----man. That guy makes dreams come true for orphaned orangutans from Java to Jersey.

NII: Do you think Shrimpanzee will ever get together and work on new material?

DAN: I'm no gambler, but I would take that bet.
NII: How was your experience with Ugly Radio Rebellion (Southern Chapter)?

DAN: Scott Schroen is a workhorse's idol! He is on a mission to play over 10,000 shows of Zappa's music. With a goal like that there is no gray area when it comes to work ethic. My chops were never tighter. I had to learn 47 songs in a month before my first show....by ear! Zappa brings out the best (and worst) in me.I was also very fortunate to once again share the stage with Andy Turpen. He is like my own favorite, twisted carnival!

NII: What's going on with Trick Of Shadow?

DAN: Well, T of S is a perpetual entity. I have been working on new songs in my spare time. There is an album-in-the-making with Fecal Productions producer Dan Allen. For now I am pretty busy with other musical projects.

NII: Do you know the guys in Pet Minotaur? If so, are they really weird in real life?

DAN: Who?

NII: What are your thoughts on the current state of popular music?

DAN: I passed over the "uncontrollable vomiting", and "hopeless lament" stages and went right to "just plain numb".

NII: Do you get into the jam bands?

DAN: I believe that bands that identify with the "Jam Band" label have helped the independent music scene, festivals and the like, tremendously. Hats off to ten minute two chord progression vamps. "Let them eat brownies!"

NII: Who is the most bad-ass, insane, scary guitar player in your opinion? Why?

DAN: Allan Holdsworth, no question. The fun is in finding out why! Every professional axe-master has tipped the hat to the man. A real innovator in a sea of caricature guitarists. Not to mention his phrasing is other worldly.

NII: What albums have inspired you the most over the years?

DAN: I "did my part" and voted for Obama. I approve of the man of brown getting the highest seat in the house of white! Poetic justice in a way.Bipartisinism is the modern-day employment of one of the oldest tactics in war, as illustrated by Sun Tzu in "The Art of War"; Divide and Conquer! We are inundated with shallow choices and conveniences while our government runs wild with our STOLEN TAX MONEY (would you keep giving your money to your kids if they were buying crack to flip and weapons to bully the block??)! The voters have accepted the role of the helpless child, dependent on our government to think for us. The figurehead choices we have in this election are the worst yet. I guess the average voter has proven that more than two choices cuts into American Idol time. We need to shut off the power for a month without telling anyone when it will come on. That seems to be the only way true positive change will happen.I relinquish my soap box!

First of all, we want to wish Andrew Moore a Happy Birthday!!!

Hey! Yes, I know, it's been a loooooooooong time since I've updated this thing. There have been alot of changes at OJABOM Media. Just about everyone involved is in a different state! I'm talking physical states, not mental (as if that would be anything out of the ordinary). Alot of folks are still in Michigan, but it's just not the same (so I've been told).

Anyway, we're all out trying to find greener pastures or something. If anything happens, you will definitely read about it here.

In the meantime, OJABOM Media on Myspace will keep you updated with the piddley little details.

I know, I know... not much of an update, but at least we're now in 08 with everyone else.

Tea In The Sahara With Nomeus Music

Introducing Pet Minotaur and Uneasys!

Pet Minotaur is a strange little outfit from my hometown of Milford, Michigan. I can't really say who is involved for sure, but they are an interesting group. The bulk of their material seems to be improvised and tends to fluctuate between complete chaos and serene passages that might be prescribed for severe insomnia.
Yes, there is a British group with a very similar name, but this particular group has been around longer. Noone really knows for sure when Pet Minotaur started, but it is believed to have been sometime in the mid-eighties.
I will be posting much more about this group in the near future (including mp3's and other oddities)... in the meantime, please enjoy this video of Pet Minotaur performing live in 2006:

Next up we have a short film entitled "Szgggh" by another Milford group called Uneasys.
Uneasys is another offshoot of the legendary Shrimpanzee that features myself (johnmoore) and an array of guest collaborators.
As you may notice, some of the footage is recycled from the video for Shrimpanzee's "Soul Eater" *(see previous blog). The reason being is that in the middle of assembling "Szgggh", the camera's battery died, and the filmmaker was forced to use recycled and random test footage. The filmmaker could've waited to get more batteries, but, hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go!

Without Annette...

Ahhh yesss.... We finally have some Nomeus Trio to share with you all!!! Sorry it's been awhile since I last posted something, but here we go now...

This performance occurred on Saturday, April 7th, 2007 at the now defunct Sahara Hookah Lounge in downtown Milford, Michigan. I called Sahara on Wednesday, April 4th just to see how to go about booking a show there... they immediately asked if we were available for that Saturday. I called up the other guys to see if they were up for it (i didn't think they would be), and they were!

See, we had only rehearsed together a handful of times, and we only had about 4 or 5 songs (originals and covers) ready to go. We were required to play from 10 pm to 1 am, so we dove in head first with some ridiculous (and brave) improvisations. This show did include the 4 or 5 songs mentioned above (I didn't include them here), but the improvisations really seemed to take off. Noone in attendance seemed interested in our presence, which I believe helped us out a bit. Also, the tiny venue's over-the-top light show definitely pushed us into the unknown. I must add that though the whole thing was a nerve trip, it was alot of fun. Also, it was the eve of my birthday, so some imbibification was involved. Hey, it was my birthday, deal with it!

Anyway, this collection contains 6 improvisations from that night and the audio is taken directly from a VHS tape that was dubbed from a digital camera. Marc Maddin (of Liquid Illustration) is responsible for the documentation. Thanks Marc!!!

I Wish We Were Millionaire Sweethearts

Welcome back!
Okay... my original intention was to upload Shrimpanzee Vol. 1 first and then go from there, but then I realized that the original mix(es) were much too quiet for public consumption. I will do what needs to be done and get it up here in the near future... in the meantime, here is Shrimpanzee Volume 2 in all it's naive, lo-fi glory!

Shrimpanzee Volume 2 was recorded in my apartment (a.k.a. Purgatory Sound) in Milford, Michigan in the summer of 2003.

Recorded mostly with a digital editing suite of some design (there's some 4-track magic in there somewhere), I, johnmoore, recorded the bulk of the material by myself. Remember, this was 4 years ago... I didn't (and still don't) know alot about computers!

One standout track, "Glissando Datanaozap" was a collaboration with my good friend Dan Cowlin (who eventually became full-time bassman),

3 others (Surf-Bound Train, the Score, and Empty Flask) were recorded with original Shrimpanzee member and phantom writer Joe Blanchard. He wrote "Surf-Bound Train" and "Empty Flask"... "the Score" was co-written with m'self.

"Bleeding Hearts" is a song written by my father, John Marshall Moore (I'm not a junior... we have different middle names)... I've always liked this song alot. Actually, I like most of his songs... the guy has a ton of songs... I will post a blog about him sometime in the future.

"chickenbananafrog (fish)" is one in a long line of chicken-themed songs in the Shrimpanzee catalog. This one is a collaboration between myself and my (then) 8 year old son, Andrew. This is definitely a masterpiece.

The last collaboration on this album is the full-length version of "the Initial Feed". This song originally appeared on the Empty Flask e.p. that Joe Blanchard and I put together before this full-length came together. It features Mr Jeffrey Dajos on alto sax, and it is somewhat of a "ballet" I suppose. The e.p.'s liner notes actually had a play-by-play meant to be read while listening to this piece. Basically, it's the story of a surfer who wipes out, sinks to the bottom of the ocean, and has to contend with an obnoxious octopus. Eventually he (the surfer) makes it back to dry land where he has a spiritual awakening in a nightclub (and meets the octopus again in his vision). Nonsense really, but who am I to judge?

The rest of the tracks were written by me. My favorite is definitely "Millionaire Sweethearts". I wrote this song for and dedicate it to my amazing friend Christina Joy.

first... i want to share with you: a thing to look at that i created with mind power...(the thing to the left). it's the side profile of a XeocoeX warrior drone. pretty bizarre, eh? the first time I saw one, i almost passed out from weird-overload. don't worry, they're mostly harmless unless you rattle their hive.

anyway, whatever. i just discovered this neat little player thing, and i want to see if it works. if it does, please listen at your leisure. as always, contact me if there are any problems.

Shrimpanzee Live at IAG 2-2-07

Ok, this is my first attempt at posting about and sharing some music. Don't worry Mr Man! This is my band! (not that it really matters now that the music industry is on it's last leg...)

Shrimpanzee is/was a bit of a conceptual group i put together back in early 2003. it wasn't a proper group by any means at that point. it was mostly just me with special guests including Joe Blanchard (who wrote many great songs... i hope he's still writing!), Daniel Cowlin (of Trick of Shadow, Frankenhead fame), and to an even lesser extent, my son Andrew and Mr Jeffrey Dajos (of Jeff Dajos fame).

This incarnation recorded 3 albums (Shrimpanzee Volume 1, Shrimpanzee Volume 2, and Orange) and hours of other stuff that i didn't really approve of at the time (check back for future ramblings regarding these recordings). A few live-action incarnations of Shrimpanzee surfaced in 2004... more on these situations in the future! Stay Tuned!

Anyway, this recording features the legendary 4 piece, live incarnation of the mighty Shrimpanzee featuring myself on guitar, Dan Cowlin on bass, "Oily" Dave Hollingshead (formerly of pioneering gore-metal group Repulsion and later of Pub Life) on drums, and the hyper-kinetic Andrew "Baldy Locks" Turpen (formerly with Dissonance, MuSH, and a huge mess of other projects... more on these fellows later).

We played at It's A Grind coffee house (now independent and dubbed the Mug Shot Cafe) on February 2nd 2007. wow, that was a long time ago! there was no special occasion, just the thursday night open mic (that i still host at the moment). the energy was high, and we were all excited to unleash on an unsuspecting audience what we'd been rehearsing for several weeks.

Of the set we played, only one was an original: Alien Brushfire was originally written by myself in 2003 and featured on the album Orange. At one point, Dan Cowlin helped me add some more parts to make it more interesting (this was in an earlier 3 piece live incarnation of Shrimpanzee... more on that later as well). I am quite proud of this particular rendition. At the end of the song, Andy apologizes for possibly frightening a little girl with his singing and stage antics... it's funnier than it sounds.

This is the most recent incarnation of Shrimpanzee, and we only played 2 more shows after this night (one of them was at Paychecks in Hamtramck opening up for Amandla (project of the ridiculously talented Claude Coleman Jr of Ween) along with local pals the Deetrick Furrys). I don't know what the future holds for Shrimpanzee, but it has become somewhat of an obscure household name (on the internet, anyway), so i don't think I will close any doors regarding this particular projects. It's sort of like a very loyal dog... whatever that might mean.

greetings! my name is johnmoore and this blog is going to be about creativity.
i believe creativity is key to living a balanced and sane life.
humor is also important.
seriously... i couldn't live without either of these things.

anyway, my primary thing is music. that's what i do.
i'm not saying that i'm a great musician or anything, but it is where i feel at home.
i write, play, record, and perform music whenever i get the chance.
